ROAD CYCLING RACE

PALMERSTON N. TO WELLINGTON. WON BY L. HAZELWOOD. (By Telegraph—Frews Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. A large number of people gathered in Aotea Quay on Saturday afternoon to see the finish of the annual Palmerston North to Wellington 100-mile North Island road cycling championship race, one of the biggest events of the cycling season. Saturday's race was one of the hardest since the inauguration of the event in 1926 because of a southerly cross wind which changed to a head wind oil the Wellington side of the Paekakariki hill. Regardless of this, the performances of the leading riders were good, and the winner, L. Hazelwood. Palmerston North, was able to gain the decision only because of the reserve of strength which enabled him to beat other aspirants to first place over the last half-mile. L. M. Richard (Christchurch) gained fastest time.

Results:— L. Hazelwood (Palmerston North). (25min). shr 27min 2sec. 1: F. Manning (Palmerston North), (25min) 5.27£ 1-5. 2: N. Scrimgeour (Wellington). 30min>, 5.32.2 2-5. 3: H.
