I<)40 WELLINGTON CUP
TO BE WORTH £3200. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The Wellington Racing Club intends to celebrate the Centennial year by making the race for the 1940 Wellington Cup a memorable one. The stake has been raised to £3200. including a £2OO gold cup presented by one of the stewards, Mr H. H. Green. The Telegraph Handicap on the same day will be worth £lOOO and the Racing Club Handicap on the second day and the Summer Handicap on the third day will also each carry a stake ..of £lOOO. The Douro Cup stake will be £sao. and will include a £5O gold cup presented by another steward. Mr H. P. F. Blundell. The sprints for the second and third day are each worth £750. An important decision by the stewards is that they have decided to eliminate all ten-furlong races from the Wellington programmes on account of the start being too close to the turn out of the straight. As a' result of this the Summer Handicap run on the third day will be over the same distance as the Racing Club Handicap—eleven furlongs. The highweight on the second day will also be over eleven furlongs, while the concluding event of the meeting, the Kelburn Handicap, usually run over one mile, will be extended to eleven furlongs.
