CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE

Convincing Victory of Yours Truly in N.Z. Cup BRILLIANT WIN BY BEAU LIVRE IN STEWARDS VICTORIA DERBY WON BY READING (BY '■CARBINE.") At the opening of the Canterbury Jockey • Club's Carnival on Saturday Yours Truly showed himself to be a real stayer by winning the New Zealand Cup by two lengths from Capricious, an outsider. Royal Chief, the favourite, received several checks in the race and had too much leeway to make up. He finished fourth, striding along like a champion in the final stages. The Stewards’ Handicap provided further evidence of the brilliance of Beaulivre, who set a new weight-carrying record for a three-year-old winner. He scored one of the easiest wins recorded in the Stewards' Handicap. At the V.R.C. meeting at Flemington on Saturday, Reading won the Victoria Derby easily from High Caste, despite a determined challenge by the latter. Maurice accounted for the Cantala Stakes, while Catalogue outclassed the other competitors in the Hotham Handicap, winning by two lengths..

RICCARTON CARNIVAL

N.Z. CUP WON BY YOURS TRULY. STEWARDS WON BY BEAULIVRE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 5. Features of the opening day of the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton on Saturday were the fairly consistent failures of the favourites and the wins of Yours Truly in the Cup and of Beaulivre in the Stewards. The only favourites to win were Duncannon and Beaulivre. Yours Truly won the Cup in fine style after being well handled throughout by the successful Hawke’s Bay apprentice W. J. Mudford. He ran kindly all the way and stayed on well. Yours Truly is owned and raced by his breeder, Mr J. S. McLeod, who also won the C.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap with the dam, My Own. It was a coincidence that while the Cup should be won by a Hawke’s Bay horse trained in Wellington, the other leg of the double, the Stewards’ Handicap, should go to a Wellington horse trained in Hawke's Bay. W. J. Mudford, the successful apprentice rider who steered Yours Truly to victory in the New Zealand Cup, has gradually been forcing his way to the attention of the racing public by his ability, but it is unusual for a lad to win a race like the New Zealand Cup so early in his career. Mudford was born in Auckland and is about 18 years of age.

Beaulivre showed his superiority today in most convincing style and not only set a new record for three-year-olds in the Stewards, but also won in most convincing fashion. Atkins gave him a good rousing shake up in the preliminary, and in the race he showed all his earlier brilliance.

Capricious was always one of the leaders in the New Zealand Cup, and, though Wiggins was hard at her on the turn and she appeared to be gone, he never let up and she stayed on for second from Dictate. With less vigour in the saddle she would have been nowhere near the money. Dictate was toward the rear early, but had improved his position on the home turn, and he finished in his usual solid fashion. The topweight and favourite, Royal Chief, finished fourth, and it was a great effort, for he was badly hampered in the big field. At no stage were there more than six or seven horses behind him. and at the half there were only two. if Arctic King is excepted, for he was a long way back on his own. broken down. In addition to the breakdown of Arctic King the race also saw the end of Lowenberg, who broke his front fetlocks and was destroyed. The winner’s time, 3.22 2-5, is only one-fifth outside Palantua’s race record established in 1933 on a much faster track.

There was a large attendance, including many North Islanders, but with the failure of the favourites, a small hurdle field, and an apprentices’ race, betting showed sharp fluctuations. After the seventh race the turnover was £2OOO down, but a good recovery was made, and the day’s total of £71,512 (win £30,116, place £41,396) was an increase of £1245 10s on last Cup day. The cup pool was £12,832, and the field of 22 a record one for starters, the previous, largest having 21 in Downfall's year. 1908. Results: —
