To Find the N.Z. Derby Winner
RICCARTON HANDICAP CONSIDERED GOOD TEST
(BY -CARBINE.") The Riccarton Handicap, the last race on today's C.J.C. programme has been generally regarded as a good trial for the New Zealand Derby. In 1926 Commendation. 9.9, beat a good handicap horse in Footfall, 9.6, and put up one of the best Derby trials ever seen. He won the Derby, and should also have won the Stead Gold Cup. but his final run was left too late. In 1934 Sporting Blood, 8.1, paved the way to success in the Derby by beating Cricket Bat, 9.3, in-the Riccarton Handicap in Imin 51 4-ssec.’ Stepniak won the Stewards’ Handicap with 7.10, and followed on by beating the New Zealand Cup winner, St Hippo, in the Derby. Bon Reve, 8.6, dead-heated with Stardancer in the Stewards’ and also won the Derby. Since then Derby winners have not appeared in the field for the Stewards’ Handicap. Three-year-olds that have‘won the Stewards’ Handicap include Clanranald 8.5, Stenpiak 7.10, Royal Artillery 7.10, Machine-gun 8.9, Gold Crest 8.3, Bon Reve 8.6, and Stardancer 6.7, Warstep 6.13 J (afterwards unlucky to suffer defeat by Bonny Helen in the Oaks Stakes), Eulalies 8.1, Autopay 7.2, and Paper Slipper 8.5.
Beaulivre in Good Heart.
It is reported that Beaulivre has done well since racing at Trentham, ; but it is unlikely that he will be a star- j ter in the Canterbury Cup on the third day, as his efforts are to be confined to i the Stewards’ Handicap and the Derby on Monday. After their great struggle over a mile and a-quarter in the Harcourt Stakes on the concluding day of the Wellington meeting there will be general disappointment that he and Beaupartir will not meet in this mile and a-half race at Riccarton. Beaulivre 7.11 beat Beaupartir 9.0 by a neck in 2min. 6}sec. at Trentham, and at Riccarton next week the weights would have been Beaupartir 9.0 and Beaulivre 7.12. Unlucky Thirteen. The Melbourne Cup has been won several times by horses carrying No 13 saddlecloth, and it is interesting that on three occasions three-year-olds succeeded when No 13, namely, Poseidon in 1906, Artilleryman in 1919, and Hall Mark in 1933. Poseidon was No 13 the first year he won the Caulfield Cup and when successful the following year was No 1. In 1916, when Sasanof won the Melbourne Cup, there were 28 runners, and the New Zealand horse carried No 28 saddlecloth, which is the highest number to succeed in the race. FIXTURES. Tribute to Trainers,
While tributes are being paid to the great training performance of‘H. Bamber, who kept Rivette going from winter racing to success in the Caulfield Cup, it has been generally overlooked that Frank Godby, trainer of Maikai, who ran second, almost equalled the performance. Maikai, like Rivette, has been racing since the winter. In fact, whereas Rivette had her first race in preparation for the spring on June 26. Maikai started on June 12.
Maikai, following his second in the Caulfield Cup, is very firm in the Melbourne Cup market, and apparently his Caulfield run has not harmed him. “He pulled up well, and at the moment he is perfect,” said Maikai’s trainer. Bourbon, who is Godby’s other representative in the Melbourne Cup, has been given swimming exercise, and Godby is hopeful of getting him to the post. New Zealand Cup Fields. The biggest field that has ever started in the New Zealand Cup was 21 in Downfall’s year (1908), and the smallest fields 8, in 1889, 1891, and 1904. Last year there were 18 starters, but this year, if all the final acceptors go to the post, there will be a field of 22. Sale of Gold Salute. It is now reported from Sydney that the price paid for Gold Salute was £7OOO, of which £6OOO was paid in cash and £lOOO invested on his chance of winning the A.J.C. Derby. After winning a division of the Burwood Handicap on Caulfield Cup day, Mr Cooper stated that he was satisfied that Gold Salute was worth the purchase money, and was willing to back the Lord Warden colt to beat High Caste at even weights at any distance from one furlong to five miles. Good Odds. A solitary investor was on the winning combination of Khyber and Graceful Mover in the first of the totalisator doubles at Doomben (Brisbane) recently, and collected the substantial return of £285 5s for 5s outlay. Catalogue. Last year the Melbourne Cup was a false-run race, and suited Catalogue. He won the Jockey Club Handicap with 9.0 in lmin 37sec, very easily, and was a difficult horse to chase over the final mile at Flemington when carrying 8.4. He won in 3min 26.',sec. Wotan holds the record at 3min 21-jsec, and The Trump won in 3min. 21Jsec.
WOMEN RIDERS
NEWMARKET TOWN PLATE. A descendant of King Charles II rode in the Newmarket Town Plate on October 12. The race was founded by King Charles II in 1666 to commemorate his accession to the Throne. He decreed that it should be run on the second Thursday in October for ever. The.descendant was Lady Mary Rose Ritzroy, grand-daughter of the eighth Duke of Grafton and sister of the ninth duke, who was killed in 1936 while competing in the Limerick Internation-; al Grand Prix Motor Race. The first Duke of Grafton was a son of 11. Lady Mary, who was born in 1918, is well known in hunting circles and rides with the Grafton Hunt. She has ridden in many point-to-point races. Her mount in the Town Plate was Mr R. Taylor’s Simple Simon, who was unplaced. The event went to Contrevent. winner of the Cesarowilch last year, by a head from Roanoke, ridden by Miss A. Earl, with Monte Rouge third. The winner was ridden by Miss V. Bullock, who was cheered by the crowd as she returned after winning. It was a victory for the Royal Air Force, as P. Allden, Contrevent’s trainer, is now a pilot officer, and Miss Bullock is in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. They are stationed nt the same camp, and many of their comrades. including their squadron loader, had come to see the race. Miss Bullock, a pretty blonde, was capless and breathless as she staggered into the weighing room, with ■her saddle and equipment. “Contrevent carried 12 stone.” she said, “and, as I weigh only Bst 71b, I have got 3st 71b deadweight hero. I ought to be able to ride, as my uncle won both the Derby and Oaks on Signorinetta many years ago. and he is still riding. 1 used to help my father with the training of his horses.”
Mr Middleman, who bought Contravent for 1000 guineas, is a well-known East End philanthropist. Contravent is to run again in the Cesarewitch.
