BELGIAN NEUTRALITY

BROADCAST BY KING LEOPOLD. In a broadcast speech to the United States, King Leopold described Belgium’s position as a neutral. He emphasised that if his country was forced into war, it would be fought on Belgian soil, which would mean the destruction of Belgium. If this took place Belgium would face her task with the same conviction as 25 years ago, but with a 10 times stronger nation. In the meantime, however. Belgium placed her trust in the word of the belligerent nations that they would respect her neutrality. In connection with the broadcast, Daventry quoted a Berlin newspaper report' which .stated that Germany would have to consider whether Belgium’s attitude could be regarded as strictly neutral because of the antiGerman propaganda in the Belgian Press.
