DAIRY PRODUCTION
DECREASE STILL EVIDENT. SUPPLIES SLOWLY INCREASING. Dairy production throughout New Zealand is definitely down this year, following on the effects of the prolonged drought at the beginning of the year. Although supplies are now increasing, they have not reached the quantity usual in a normal season. This appears to be due entirely to v/eather conditions. Cold spells, like the one at present being experienced, set and keep the cows back, but with a return of warmer weather the animals should respond. The grass does not appear to be coming away so-freely this year and if growth is retarded too much, the pastures usually run up to seed when growth does start. As a rcpult of the drought, dairy stock are not in very good condition this season. On the other hand, sheep have come through remarkably well. Although lambing percentages are down from five to ten per cent owing to the general scarcity of twins, this season’s lambs are larger and more forward than usual and some fine early drafts have been sent away. Many farmers consider the present lambing season to be one of the most favourable experienced for many years.
