WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

MEETING AT GLADSTONE. Mrs McKay presided over a very small attendance last week when the Gladstone Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting. Several apolog'les for absence were received. All business was dealt with. Mrs Wellwood gave a very interesting account of the Federation meeting held recently in Martinborough. After a tasty afternoon tea served by Mrs Ogilvy and helpers, Mrs Cleghorn gave a very interesting talk on Poland. This was much appreciated. On the motion of Mrs McKay, Mrs Cleghorn was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competitions resulted as follows:—Rainbow sponge: Mrs Crew, 1. Best lettuce: Miss N. Wyeth, 1; Miss M. Crew, 2. Something new from something old: Mrs Bubb, 1; Miss J. Bubb and Miss N. Wyeth (equal), 2. KOPUARANGA. MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Kopuaranga Women’s Institute was l\eld in the hall when in the absence of the president, Mrs Jarrett (vice-president) presided over a fair attendance of members. A letter from the Dominion Organiser was read, and the Institute calendar was on exhibition. A report of the Federation meeting was given by Mrs A. B. Cottle. Owing to illness in the family, Mrs Pringle, who was to demonstrate brass and pewter work, was unable to be present. Mrs Jarrett gave an interesting talk on her trip to Auckland, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The roll call, “My Favourite Song,” was answered by all present, and a limerick competition caused much amusement.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames R, Kenny and W. J. Cottle.

On November 9 there will be a display of work and a produce and Christmas present stall. The monthly competitions resulted as follow:—Stocking bag/ Miss M. Wright, 1; Mrs Wright, 2; Mrs A. B. Cottle, 3. Best bloom: Mrs A. B. Cottle, 1; Mrs S. J. Clarke, 2; Miss Wright, 3. Decorated vase: Miss Wright, 1; Mrs Reside, 2; Mrs Jarrett, 3. The singing of the National Anthem brought the afternoon to a close. KAITUNA-FERNRIDGE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Kai-tuna-Fernridge Women’s Institute was held in the Kaituna Hall recently when Mrs Welch presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the prayer for peace of the world and the Aspiration. Mesdames Ramsay and Welch were appointed as delegates to attend the Federation meeting at Martinborough. During the afternoon Mesdames Thompson and Ramsay gave a very interesting talk and demonstration on St. John Ambulance work. .The competition for the afternoon was for “the best flower from my garden,” and resulted as follows: —ivTrs Scharnwebber, 1; Mrs Alan Keir, 2. The afternoon tea hostesses were Mrs Pringle and Miss L. Pain. The gathering closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
