SOLWAY COLLEGE

OLD GIRLS’ CONCERT DRAMA THROUGH THE AGES. HIGH CLASS ENTERTAINMENT. On Saturday night a most enjoyable concert was given by the Solway College Old Girls. The theme of the entertainment was “Drama Through the Ages.” The Wellington Old Girls gave the first item, a scene from a tragedy by Euripides. This was followed by a miracle Play presented by the Masterton branch. Next came the highlight of the evening, the presentation by the Wellington Girls-of the Pyramus and Thisbe Scene from Midsummer Night’s Dream. Great ability was shown by all actresses and the one actor, Rajah, a small Scotch terrier, gave a specially creditable performance. A scene from Sheridan’s “School for Scandal,” presented by Jean Douglas and Megan Rowlands of the Masterton branch, came next, and was followed by “The Key of the Situation,” a modern thriller performed by Nora Ractliffe and Jean Douglas. The last two items by the Wellington Girls were “After All” a dramatic play, the scene of which was laid in a mining village, and “Just Like a Woman,” by Rona Avann and Nancy Fleming, a comedy which concluded the entertainment on a note of humour. Thus in the space of two hours those present were transported from the sombre shades of classical Greece to the hectic hustle of modern social life.

A pleasant interlude was a ballet “Vienna Woods,” danced by the Wellington Girls to the accompaniment of a choir of Masterton girls. Mrs M. B. Thompson, Principal of the school, who had been presented with a colourful programme designed and painted by Hora Shaw, called for three cheers for the Old Girls in general, and for Rona Avann in particular. On behalf of the school she expressed warm appreciation of the help and entertainment the Old Girls had given to the present girls. - The usual “Good-night” choruses, and the singing of the National Anthem brought to a close an evening as educative as it was entertaining. The Masterton Old Girls who took! part in the entertainment were; Jean Douglas, Annie Tregurtha, Nora Ractliffe, Alice Eton, Megan Rowlands, Mollie Cook, Ily Southey, Hora Shaw. The Wellingtonians were: Rona Avann, Nancy Fleming, Marie Prebble, Etta Littlejohn, Marjorie Dykes, Pat Beale, Millicent Ince, Joan Ince, Pauline Carter, Margaret Nimmo, Marie Mazengarb, Molly Goodworth, Dorothy Nowell, Kathleen. Smith, Zelma Mexted.
