Dr Truby King Memorial Fund. A donation of 5s has been made to the Dr Truby King Memorial Fund by Mrs R. S. Gerrand. Child’s Success. A creditable performance in cooking was achieved by Nancy Denholm, of Clay Creek, Martinborough, who was awarded first prize at the Wairarapa Show yesterday for meringues. Although only eight years old, she was able to secure first prize honours against many adult competitors who are considered among the best cooks in the district. South Island Main Trunk. Except for general “cleaning up” work, the construction of the South Island Main Trunk railway is expected to be finished in 12 months. Making this announcement after an inspection of the work between Wharanui and Parnassus, the terminus, the Minister of Public Works, Mr Semple, said that, provided rails could be supplied, the line would be opened for traffic before the scheduled time in 1941. Exhibition Choral Numbers. The original intention in connection with the opening of the Centennial Exhibition was that the three choral numbers would be “God Defend New Zealand,” “The Old Hundredth.” and "Land of Hope and Glory.” Becausethe necessary number of copies of “Land of Hope and Glory” cannot be obtained it has been struck off the programme, and in its place the choir will sing “Hallelujah" chorus from "Messiah” (Handel). Wet Canteens. "We have every reason to expect that wet canteens will be established in camps,” said Mr J. W. Kendall, president of the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association, when the subject was raised at the quarterly meeting.’ "They will be staffed by returned soldiers, but will be controlled by the Government.” A member asked if the association had been given any intimation as to where the profits from the canteens would go. Mr Kendall replied that it was definite that the profits from both wet and dry canteens would be put into a pool for the benefit of the men.

New Section at Horticultural Show. In connection with the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society’s Show on November 22, a new section, that for sketching, has been added to the schedule. In the open class the competition will be for a flower study or garden scene in colour. The exhibit must not be a copy, and is to be mounted, but not framed. For children under 15 years of age there will be a competition for a flower study in pencil or colour, the conditions being similar to those in the open class. Entries for these two competitions will close on November 14, and exhibits must be submitted by that date.

Royal Commission of Inquiry. A Royal Commission to inquire into and report on the accident which occured on September 24 at the Glen Afton mine, and as as result of which 11 lives were lost, has been set up, by the Government. The personnel of the commission is:—Mr Stanley Logan Paterson, S.M., Hamilton, who will be chairman; Mr John Connell 'Brown, M.8.E., Westport, retired mine manager; Mr John Dowgray, Granity, retired colliery official; Mr Thomas Otto Bishop, Kellington, Secretary of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Association; Mr Angus McLagan, Greymouth, secretary of the United Mine Workers Federation of New Zealand. The commission has been set up for the purpose of inquiring into the cause of the accident and into the working of the existing law in respect to the prevention of such accidents.
