CARTERTON
GAME OF BOWLS TWO SETS OF CHALLENGES. ("Times-Age” Special.) Two sets of challenges have already been posted at the pavilion, one for the Masson Fours and another for the DeLacey Pairs. The holders of the former, Messrs Callender, Robertson, Beale and Tucker (s), have received a challenge from Messrs R. Harrington, A. Thompson, F. Harrington and R. Thompson (s). The holders of the DeLacey Buttons, Messrs Lynch and Tucker (s), are challenged by Messrs Newbould and Hughan (s). These challenges were posted on October 21 and according to the conditions laid down have to be completed in 14 days, otherwise a forfeit on either side will occur. It will be as well for members to study the rules and conditions, as they will be rigidly carried into effect. Shortage of Potatoes. There is a shortage of potatoes in Carterton at present. Until a day or so ago American tubers were available, but these have been sold out. There are seed potatoes available and very small stocks of last season’s potatoes are available. New potatoes from Pukekohe are usually plentiful at this time of the year, but the cold weather experienced in the northern district, which included heavy snow, retarded the growth of the tubers and continued cold snaps have not improved matters. It is doubtful if Pukekohe potatoes in any quantity will be on the market for some time. Personal. Word has been received by the chairman of the Carterton School Committee, Mr H. J. McKenzie, that Miss I. Maxwell, of Te Kuiti, has been appointed assistant teacher at the Carterton District High School. She will take up her duties after the summer vacation in February. Mr W. Miller, who returned, from a trip to Christchurch oni Monday, was taken ill on his return arid was ordered to the Masterton Hospital by his medical advisor.
