LADIES’ GOLF
PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY MISS HELEAN BRILLIANT PLAY IN FINAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Playing as brilliant golf as has been seen in New Zealand since the British women's team was here in 1935, Miss Patricia Helean, Hastings club champion, won the Wellington women's provincial championship for 1939 at Heretaunga yesterday. She beat Miss Patricia Bell, Wanganui, holder of the title, 2 and 1, in the semifinal, and then went on strongly in the afternoon to beat Miss Claire Smith, the Invercargill champion, 4 and 3, in the final. The weather was beautifully fine, the Heretaunga links were in perfect order, and the golf was in keeping with the weather and the first-class condition of the course. Other results were: — Heretaunga Trophy. Semifinals: Miss D. Thompson (Hastings) beat Mrs Welton-Hogg (Wellington); 6 and 4; Mrs Wiren (Hutt) beat Miss Pearce (Wairarapa). 2 up. Final: Miss Thompson beat Mrs Wiren, 5 and 3. Championship Flight. Semifinals: Mrs Thurgood beat Mrs Newton by default; Miss Hornabrook beat Miss Nutt, 1 up. Final: Miss Hornabrook boat Mrs Thurgood, 3 and 1. Bogey Foursomes. Mrs Dudley (Hutt) and Mrs Park (Hutt), 1 down.
MASTERTON CLUB. RESULTS OF CHAMPIONSHIPS. The results of the Masterton Ladies’ Golf Club senior and junior championships, the finals of which were played yesterday are:— Senior championship: Semi-finals, Miss Todd beat Mrs Drew, 2 and 1; Miss Jury beat Mrs P. Fagan, 1 up at the 19th. Final: Miss Jury beat Miss Todd, 2 and 1. Junior championship: Semi-finals, Mrs Nitz beat Miss L. Beetham. 5 and 4; Miss J. Wrigley beat Mrs R. Gordon Lee, 1 up at the 19th. Final: Mrs Nitz beat Miss Wrigley, 3 and I.
