BRIGADE UNIFORMS LADIES EFFORTS APPRECIATED. The Carterton Fire Brigade members last evening showed their appreciation of the work the ladies’ committee in connection with the recent effort to provide funds for the purchase of new uniforms for the firemen, replacing those purchased in 1908. The time was taken up in dancing to excellent music played by Mrs V. J. Ashton, of Kent Street, Carterton. During the supper adjournment Miss O. W. Wolters, chairwoman of the ladies’ committee who volunteered to do all in their power to raise the necessary funds required to finance the purchasing of the new uniforms, spoke very warmly of the committee's work and said it had been a very great pleasure to her to act as chairwoman. Everyone had worked willingly and it was a pleasure to her to have been ‘ associated with such a committee. Mrs H. H. Meyrick, the secretary, had worked hard and she deserved a word of praise for the manner in which she had carried out her duties. The committee was delighted at the response of the public generally. As a result of their effort Miss Wolters said that she had great pleasure in handing over to the brigade a cheque for £lO3 10s Id (applause). Miss Wolters then presented Mrs Meyrick with a beautiful posy and thanked her for the excellent manner in which she had carried out her duties as secretary (applause). The Superintendent of the brigade, Mr R. P. Wakelin, replied on behalf of the brigade, and thanked Miss Wolters and the ladies for their achievement. He referred to the help given by the Borough Council, which was much appreciated. This assistance, however, did not cover their requirement in The raising of funds for new uniforms. He assured the ladies’ committee that their great help was very much appreciated indeed. The Mayor (Mr D. Taaverner) paid a tribute to the ladies’ committee and also the residents of Carterton and district for the way in which they had come forward with assistance for their volunteer brigade which, incidentally, they were very proud of as it was the premier brigade of New Zealand. The Mayor said it was a great pity that the scheme sponsored by the Government to place all brigades under municipal control had not been carried into effect. This would have meant the boroughs would have found half of the expenses and insurance companies the other half. He was glad to be present and to share in thanking the ladies for their excellent assistance to such a worthy institution as the fire brigade. BOY SCOUTS WEEKLY CARD PARTY.
