ACTORS AND ACTRESSES
SELECTION OF THE CRITICS. Leading actresses selected by critics up to June 1 were Claudette Colbert, Norma Shearer, Shirley Temple, and Bette Davis. Bette is the top favourite with critics, having been named twice for her performances in “Dark Victory” and “Jaurez.” It is thought by many that her work in “Dark Victory” will earn her the coveted award for the third time.
The five actors chosen since January 1 are Niven ("Dawn Patrol"), Clark Gable ("Idiot’s Delight”). Warner Baxter ("Wife. Husband, and Friend”), Robert Donat (“Mr Chins"). Paul Muni (“Jaurez”). Critics think this will resolve itself into a close battle between Muni and Donat, unless some greater performance is given in the last half of the year. This has been a notable year for Hollywood to date, with one great picture after another and many more scheduled for release. Greater care in selection of casts and stories has lifted Hollywood to the greatest dramatic and entertainment heights it has ever reached.
