LADIES’ GOLF

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY AT HERETAUNGA. MISS COLLINS DEFEATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The weather was kinder yesterday when the first and second rounds of the Wellington provincial women's golf championship were played at Heretaunga. Thouggh the day was fine, a piping north-westerly wind had to be contended with, and, as it was a cross wind, care had to be taken in controlling shots. The outcome of the play was proof that the standard of golf is stronger in other parts of the Dominion than it is in Wellington, as all local players were eliminated, and two Hastings players, a Wanganui player, and an Invercargill player, were left in to contest the semi-finals and the final today. Miss Bell (Wanganui), who won the Wellington provincial championship last year by defeating three members of the New Zealand team in a row, proved that this was no flash in the pan. She played so well yesterday that she may retain her title today. It was in the afternoon, however, that Miss Bell proved her ability by defeating Miss Collins, woman champion! of the Dominion, by 3 and 2. Miss Bell took the first three holes in a row, and was 4up at the fifth. Out in 39 to 43, the Wanganui player was 4 up at the turn. Miss Bell gave a taste of her quality on the eleventh green by lofting over a stymie for a win in 4 to

5, She caused another mild sensation by lofting over a bunker from 20 yards outside the thirteenth green into the < cup for a win with a birdie 4, after . she had found a bunker with her , drive.
