LADIES’ GOLF

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP. PLAY AT HERETAUNGA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day." The Wellington Ladies’ Golf Club’s provincial championship and handicap tournament has always been one of the most popular golfing events of the year, and the tourney which opened at Heretaunga yesterday promises to prove no exception. Competitors were present from Masterton, Invercargill, Christchurch, Nelson, Wanganui, Palmerston North and Hastings, while Wellington clubs were well represented. It was unfortunate that heavy rain fell in the morning, which delayed the start for about half an hour. When it was seen that the rain was likely to continue, players went out into the persistent drizzle, and did particularly well, considering that stances were insecure, grips slippery, and a maximum of clothing had to be worn. When the rain cleared about 1 o’clock a strong northerly wind set in, which increased to half-gale force. The following 16 players qualified to play off for the provincial championship:— Miss P. Helean 83-79-162: Miss J. Duncan 89-84-164; Miss Smith 82-83-165; Miss P. Bell 82 87 169; Miss S. Collins 87-83-170; Miss C. Wilson 86-87-173; Mrs Wilson 89-85-174; Mrs H.
