CARTERTON
THE DAIRY INDUSTRY ' CHEESE CONSIGNMENT. ("Times-Age” Special.; Large quantities of cheese have been recently taken from Wairarapa factories to various railway stations for transport to cool storage in Wellington. Beneficial Rain. A very beneficial warm rain fell iri Carterton on Monday evening and early yesterday morning and did a wonderful amount of good to pastures and kitchen gardens. So heavy was the fall of rain in the hills that it brought down much of the snow with the result that the principal rivers were run ■ ning very high. Small Fruit. If there are no heavy frosts and high winds there is certain to be a heavy crop of small and other fruits this season. Peach, nectarine and cherry plum trees are exceptionally heavily laden. Miniature Rifles. Firing for the Witcombe and Caldwell Cup, the winners, Christchurch W.M.C.'No 2, scored 738. South Featherston were twelfth on the list with a score of 728. Max Hodder of the South Featherston Club, scored 731 in the season’s aggregate. Parcel Evening. Tomorrow evening a parcel evening and dance will be held in the band room in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Margaret Brown and Mr Gordon Udy. As both parties are held in high esteem there should be a large attendance. Exhibitors at Hawke’s Bay Show. Mr Les Gallon of Dalefield has gone to the Hawke’s Bay show and w'ill compete with 11 head of stock in the Fresian classes. This will be the first time Mr Gallon has shown at Hawke’s Bay, and it is expected with the class of stock he has taken he will be successful. Among other Wairarapa breeders who have taken stock to Hawke's Bay are Messrs J. Donald and Matthews of Featherston, who will show Herefords. Wairarapa Show. With only a week to go to the Wairarapa and E.C. P. and A. show, activity is increasing. Several improvements have been caried into effect on the grounds and the caretaker is- a very busy man at present arranging everything for the show. The entries are exceptionally good, and the class of exhibit coming forward in most classes will rank among the best sent to any show in the Dominion. Side-show space applied for is heavy, and in this I department there “will be plenty of thrills for the younger generation. The night show, which is always a feature will be quite up to the usual standard and everything tends toward a very successful 1939 show. The dog classes will be of particular interest to fanciers, as there will be exhibits from many parts of New Zealand, including the South Island. This section of the show is well ahead of any previous year in numbers.
