mand plenty of support. The Ring can be depended on to make the race interesting. La Coquette, Indian Sun and Gothic all have good chances and should run good races. Final support, however, may favour Earl Colossus Aurora’s Star Joe Louis By paying such extravagant prices for thoroughbreds, Sydney's colourful young man-of-the-turf, Alan Cooper, who must be a millionaire, certainly makes it hard for others with a liking for good blood. Mr Cooper’s deals tend to put a false value on horses. I question (says a Melbourne writer) whether was another man in Australia who would have given £19,000, or half as much, for Talking; and if you are willing to believe that Gold Salute was worth £lO.OOO, I am afraid I cannot. It is extremely doubtful whether there was a runner in the A.J.C. Derby that was worth this much, and there were a few with much better credentials than Gold Salute. There was a touch of the theatrical about this deal. On the day before the Derby was run, it was reported that Cooper had offered £6OOO. This he denied, passing it off as a joke, yet an hour before the race he made an offer of £lO,OOO for the colt, the details being completed in half an hour. It suggests that either Gold Salute’s former owner-trainer is a supersalesman or that Mr Cooper derives great pleasure from paying extravagant prices for his goods. Add to the cost the new owner's investment (said to have been £1000) on the colt in the Derby, and you get £ll,OOO as the sum that is on the debit side of the ledger at the moment. With luck, Mr Cooper will get it back, but I still think it was too big a price to pay for the colt.
The form of the three-year-olds against the old horses has not been at all convincing this season, and in the light of recent happenings it would seem that Mr Greenwood was desperately unlucky in losing the services of Defaulter at this stage, because I am more than ever convinced that had he remained sound he would have won the Melbourne Cup (writes “Chiron” in the “Australasian"). He was the only horse of real class in the field. It still looks as if the Melbourne Cup winner will'come from the ranks of the old horses, and the two which make the strongest appeal at the moment are Bourbon and Mosaic. We know they can stay two miles. The later racing at Randwick and at Caulfield may cause a revision of opinion, .but at present Bourbon. Mosaic and Feminist seem to be the best Melbourne Cup propositions in sight.
