CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Excellent Fields Engaged at Trentham SLY FOX FAVOURED IN WELLINGTON HANDICAP SLEEVELESS AND BEAUPARTIR SHOULD REGISTER GOOD PERFORMANCES (BY "CARBINE.”) Fields for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's meeting which commences tomorrow are good, there being plenty of runners of a high class. Chief interest will probably be centred round the Wellington Handicap as a number of the horses in that event are also engaged in the New Zealand Cup. The other big race on the programme is the Wainui Handicap which has drawn an excellent field of horses in top form.

Clarion Call 11 7 Jewish Lad ..9 5 Aussie Ra .. 10 8 Ruaform 9 0 Peter All Blood .. ..9 0 Beckford 10 6 Esperance Donegal .. .. 10 2 Bay 9 0 Lustral 9 5 Good Sun .. ..9 0 Reports state that Clarion Call has been doing good work outs ,and it is likely that plenty of money will be offering for this horse. Aussie Ra, in view of previous performances, must be given a great chance and at the weight appears to be a good bet. Peter Beckford might be in need of a race or two but his chances must not be cast aside without careful consideration. Donegal, Lustral and Ruaform will be on hand to make matters interesting, while a horse capable of-upset-ting the field is Good Sun. However, final selections may include Clarion Call Aussie Ra Good Sun 12.50—

Flying Spy is expected to go well. This horse is well bred and the distance is about right. Enrich must be liked but may not be a starter. Wild Fox is a coming horse and might be worth following up. Beechnut and Locrian are solid but do not impress unduly. Miss Wheriko, Serena and Lady Gustavo look the best of the others, but supported horses may include Flying Spy Wild Fox Miss Wheriko 1.35— WAINUI HANDICAP. One mile.

The Wainui Handicap promises to give the punters a headache, assail the horses engaged are good and capable of winning the event. Beaupartir must be given a great show. Then comes Majority. So far this season Majority has disappointed but there is no doubt that he is a brilliant horse and the distance should just suit him. Haughty Winner always runs well at Trentham and is expected to be in the money. Arctic King is rapidly striking form but may be in better form for the cup. Royal Star II raced at Masterton and although he did not win left a favourable impression as to his ability. Globe Trotter has the breeding and in many circles is expected to be among the placed horses. The rest of the field are all good and capable of upsetting, but support may come for Beaupartir Majority Royal Star II

| Sleeveless’s record so far this season I is an impressive one. Lucullus Boy has been running into places of late and is expected to go well in this event. Night Eruption at 8.6 looks to have a fair chance, while Malik Kafur is not without prospects. Great Legion scored a decisive win at Masterton and will probably receive a fair share of the money. Earl’s Court is a horse well worth remembering, and Lindrum at the weight must be considered. Public .opinion, however, may favour Sleeveless Great Legion Lucullus Boy 2.55 WELLINGTON HANDICAP. One mile and three furlongs.

The Wellington Handicap has attracted an excellent field and this race promises to be one of the best on the programme. Sly Fox has been shewing good form this season and will in all probability be well backed. Peerless, Quadroon and Siegmund can be relied on to make the going interesting but they do not impress as place getters. Lowenberg, Dictate and Dainty Sue are three horses whose chances are indeed good. Cuisinier went well at Masterton and at the weight must be given every chance. Yours Truly also scored well at Masterton and is expected to again run well. Lady Furst and Centrepoise have prospects and these two runners might carry plenty of money. Support on the day, however, may be offering for Sly Fox Cuisinier Yours Truly 337 WELLESLEY STAKES; for two-year-

The Wellesley Stakes, a race for two-year-olds has attracted a good field. Enrich performed attractively at Masterton and is expected to be well up in this event. Beau Leon and Beau Coureur are not without prospects while Miss Hallomet is sure to command respect. Ringcraft is a horse worth watching but supported horses on the day may include Enrich Beau Coureur Miss Hallomet 4.19—

groat show. Counterblast at the weight appeals; so does Submission. Lord Cavendish can always be depended on to make the going interesting. Blonde Princess has been showing reasonable form this season and she goes well at Trentham. Brunhild scored at Masterton but appears to be outclassed. Matoru is liked by many and might upset calculations. Horses finding favour may include Disdain Counterblast Blonde Princess .

The October Handicap, the last race of the day. should prove interesting. Pearl of Asia has drawn top weight ' but might be wanting for a race or ( two.
