LAMBING SEASON
SCARCITY OF TWINS AFFECTS PERCENTAGES. EARLY DRAFTS OF FATS. The outstanding feature of the present lambing season in the Wairarapa is the comparative scarcity of twins. Although this has affected the percentages to the extent of five to ten per cent, the season has been an exceptionally good one, as there have been few losses among ewes or lambs and the lambs are of exceptionally good quality. The average lambing percentage is probably about 85 per cent, with about 95 per cent for blackfaces. In one or two cases, percentages high as 110 to 115 have been recorded bv blackface breeders.
Some farmers experienced trouble with ewes at lambing time on account of the big lambs but on the whole the ewes were in fine fettle and came through the season in good shape. Many farmers regard the present season in spite of the scarcity of twins, as one of the best recorded for many years-, as the lower lambing percentages has been compensated by the larger and better quality lambs, which are more forward than is usually the case. As a result fat lambs of fine quality tiave i.ijme forward early.
