Mr Graham. Wellington, is staying at the Empire Hotel, Masterton. Dr. Sara Mulholland, Wellington, is 'on a visit to Masterton, and is staying at the Hotel Midland. Messrs F. W. Greenwood, H. E. Allison (Palmerston North), J. J. O’Leavy, T. W. Thbrpe (Wellington) are visitors to Masterton and are staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Guests at the Hotel Midland, Masterton, include Messrs R. Metcalfe, ■ A. Tarrant (Palmerston North), B. Thorburn, W. Rusbridge, W. Cedarman, W. Percival (Wellington), C. Morgan (Gisborne), C. Davies (Wanganui), H. Rogers (Hastings), and O’Kane (Napier). One of the old stalwarts of the Liberal Party, and for the past nine years a member of the Legislative Council, the Hon. Jonathan Trevethick, died yesterday, says a Press Association message from Auckland. Mr Trevethick, who had been in failing health for some months, was aged 75. Mr and Mrs W. J. Tripier have been appointed to the charge of the Salvation Army Military Institute in Wellington. The institute has been established in the old railway social hall. Brigadier Annie Smythe, M.A.. a New Zealand officer who has spent 33 years in Japan, has been, appointed a lecturer at-the Salvation Army court at the Centennial Exhibition.

Mr Roger G. Bahout has been appointed by the Amalgamated Theatres Ltd, manager of the Stale Theatre at Masterton. Mr Bahout had been manager of the Plaza Theatre, Wanganui, during the past two years, and prior to that manager of the State Theatre at Palmerston North for a period of eighteen months. Dr C. Coleridge Farr, F.R.S., and Professor F. F. Miles have been appointed Government representatives on the Carter Observatory Board. The resignation of Mr M. Geddes as a member of the board has been accepted. The vacancy on the board caused by the death of Dr E. Kidson. 0.8. E.. has been filled by Dr M. A. F. Barnett, M.Sc., Ph.D., F.lnst.P., representing the Royal Society of New Zealand.

Warm and touching tributes to Archbishop Averill were paid when the Auckland Anglican Synod took leave of him. The Archbishop will retire as Bishop of Auckland on March 31. Deep regret was expressed that the present official bond between the bishop and the people was soon to be broken. Stressing that he did not want a formal farewell, the Archbishop said that when one had spent the better part of a lifetime in a position the best thing was to get away quietly.

There was a large and representative attendance at the funeral in Masterton yesterday of the late Mrs J. K Logan. ~ The floral tributes were particularly profuse, testifying to the deep sympathy of the community. Wreaths were sent by the Wairarapa Cricket Association, Lansdowne Cricket Club. Old Boys Cricket Club, president, executive and members of the Wairarapa Badminton Association, members and committee of Masterton Badminton Club. Little Tennis Circle, staff of Messrs Logan and Whiteman, staff of Mr E. K. Eastwood, Messrs C. C. Ross and Co. and Messrs Daniell and Hart, besides many others. The Rev. David McNeur conducted a service at the residence and also at the graveside. The pall-bearers wore: Messrs F. Grubb. N. .11. James, C. A. Whiteman. N. G. Whiteman. H P. Glen and S V. Gooding.
