INDOOR BASKETBALL
INTER-CLUB MATCHES. MASTERTON DEFEAT HUTT VALLEY. Two of the fastest indoor basketball games ever seen in the Hutt were played on Saturday when a men's and a ladies’ team from Masterton journeyed to Lower Hutt to play a return match with the Hutt Valley teams. The first game played was between the ladies and was very even, the Hutt team leading at the end of the first quarter by 10 points to 9. and at half time held the lead, the score being 20 points to 14 in favour of Hutt. After the spell the Masterton team threw the ball about in fine style thus making the game faster still. The Hutt girls soon began to tire and at the end of the third quarter Masterton gained the lead, the score being 30 points to 22. At the end of the fourth quarter the Masterton team had scored another 18 points to Hutt's 4. thus winning the match by 48 points to 26. For Masterton the points scored are as follows:— Miss J. Gemmell 8 goals. 1 penalty goal .17 points: Miss R. Percy. 8, 0. 16: Miss P. Kilminster 3. 0. 6; Miss M. Gadsby 2. 1. 5: Miss A. Burgess 2. 0. 4; total, 48. Hutt: Miss C. Cato 6. 0, 12: Miss M. Igglestone 2. 0. 4; Miss L. Rosman 3. 0,6; Miss M. Jenkins. 1, 0. 2; Miss L. Horsyall, 1,0, 2; total. 26 points. The men’s game was also played at a fast pace, and it was the fitness of the Masterton team that gave them the victory. At no time during the first three-quarters of this game did more than three points separate the teams, and it was only during the later stages of the game that Masterton forged ahead and won by 36 points to 30. The points scored are as follow: —Masterton: S. Faulknor 6 goals, 1 penalty goal, 13 points; D. Costello. 3, 1. 7: D. Leete, 3 1. 7; E. Jaspers. 3. 0,6; .1. Broome. 1. 1. 3; total 36. Hutt: W. B. O’Shaughnessy 4; 2. 10; J. Dougan 5. 0. 10; D. Benton, 5,0, 10; total 30. Both teams were hospitably entertained at afternoon tea and later were the guests of the Hutt Club at a dance. Discussing the games with a “Times - Age" reporter after the match the Hutt representatives expressed the opinion that the game was played at a much faster pace than they were used to.
