FARMING PROBLEMS
f PROTEST AGAINST DAIRY PRODUCE PRICES. RESOLUTIONS AT PAHIATUA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) , PAHIATUA, October 14. A meeting of the Pahiatua branch of the Farmers’ Union was held last night to discuss the question of the depletion of farm and factory labour in the district because of war enlistments, and to consider what steps should be taken to replace the shortage. ‘After a long discussion it was resolved that no action be taken. It was further resolved that the Government be urged to set up a national register with a view to introducing conscription. The following resolutions were also carried: — “That this executive records a strong protest against the decision of the Government to pay last year’s prices for this season's buttei’ and cheese, in view of the fact that the prices are lower than those recommended by the 1938 advisory committee, and that it makes no allowance for increases in cost of production, which have occurred since 1938, and makes no provision for further increases which must ensue as a result of war conditions.” "That representations be made to the Government to approach the British Government with a view to having the embargo on pork under 1001 b removed or modified, as the proposed arrangement imposes considerable hardship on the pig producer and detrimentally affects our pork export trade; and also to point out the difficulty in altering our pork production system at such short notice and the impossibility of making bacon of autumn-born pigs.”
