HOMING PIGEONS
MASTERTON CLUB LONG DISTANCE RACE WINNERS. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club flew two races recently, one from Taumaranui, 145 miles airline, and one from Te Kuiti, 185 miles airline distance. Forty-four birds were liberated from Taumarunui in fine weather, with a strong easterly side wind. The firs! six places for club points were: — Stear and Miller’s Black Velvet, 4 hrs. 9 mins. 6 secs., 1; W. Steer's Blue Rocket, 4-9-21. 2; T. Hirst's Blue Nymph. 4-9,32, 3; W. Steer’s Red Heather. 4-9-47, 4; I. Mayes’s Sherwood, 4-10-19, 5; Stear and Miller’s Young Grizzly, 4-11-10. 6.
The birds from Te Kuiti were liberated in very overcast weather, there being a strong southerly headwind and drizzling rain. The first three birds were evidently in perfect racing condition, as they were half an hour ahead of the rest. The results were: —V/. Steer's Nondescript, 5 hrs. 10 mins. 44 secs, 1; F. Harding’s Jet Blue, 5-12-23, 2; W. Steer’s Kokotu, 5-12-33, 3; Stear and Miller’s Blue Lass, 5-40-58, 4; Stear and Miller’s Grand Prix, 5-41-47, 5; I. Mayes's Wanderer, 5-42-1, 6. The two races next week will be from Mercer, 253 miles airline distance, and a preliminary from Pukerua Bay for the first South Island race.
