BOWLING

CARTERTON CLUB OPENING OF SEASON. AN ENJOYABLE GATHERING. (“Times-Age" Special.) The Carterton Bowling Club opened the season on Saturday afternoon. The weather conditions were unfavourable but the green was in good order after the special treatment given it since the closing of last season. Many complimentary remarks were passed by visiting bowlers from Masterton, Park and Greytown, on the condition of the green. A full muster of Carterton members were not present, one rink journeying to Martinborough to participate in the Martinborough club's opening of the season. At 2 o'clock the president of the club. Mr A. W. Beale extended a very hearty welcome to those present, including a rink each from Mastertom Park and Greytown. He said that he hoped, despite the cold weather, that all would have a very pleasant time. Mr Beale said he could not let the opportunity pass without paying a tribute to the secretary of the club, Mr C. H. Barber for his splendid work. He felt sure he was expressing the opinion of every member of the club when he said that they had been very fortunate in having a secretary like Mr Barber, who had always done his best for the club for 14 years past. He hoped the club would continue to be fortunate enough to retain his services in the years to come. He asked all to join him in giving three hdarty cheers for Mr Barber, which was accordingly done. The club is very much indebted to members of the Masson family for the presentation of a handsome cup and brooches for' an annual competition within the club, said Mr Beale. As president he had been given the privilege by the committee to select the team to be the nominal holders, and he had chosen the following team: Callender, Robertson, Beale, Tucker (s). He remarked that he had purposely selected this team in order that the cup may change hands quickly. He trusted all competitions for the cup would be conducted in a manner that would have met with the approval of the late Mr W. T. Masson, who was himself a sportsman of the highest order, (cheers). Mr Beale said that the club’s special thanks were due to the ladies who had so continuously provided and presided over afternoon teas. The club intend- 1 ed to make the working conditions for the ladies more pleasant by enlarging the kitchen in the pavilion so as to make it more comfortable to work in. He asked the co-operation of all bowlers in soliciting from their wives a continuance of a service which had been so valuable in past years (applause Mr Beale then read apologies from Mr N. William (Eketahuna), and Mr Geo Hayne, president of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre. Both conveyed their best wishes for a happy and pros-' perous season. He then asked Mrs Beale to throw the first “Kitty” and bowl the first bowl, which she did amid hearty applause, declaring the Carterton Bowling green officially opened for the current season. ■ Before commencing play the vicepresident, Mr E. T. Beaven, said that the president had been too modest to intimate he had donated a new flag for the pole over the pavilion. They were indebted to Mr Beale for his handsome gift which was quartered with the club’s colours, red and black, and the letters “C.8.C.” in gold. He invited Mrs Beale to hoist the flag to the top of the pole, which she did amid cheers. Play was then proceeded with and a pleasant time spent on a very true green. Afternoon tea was dispensed and presided over by Mrs Beale, who' was assisted by several ladies. MASTERTON CLUB IMPORTANT DECISION. A decision of far-reaching importance was made by the committee of the Masterton Bowling Club at its last meeting, when it decided to instruct the club’s selector to select A and B teams for Booth Cup and Duthie Shield games. The A and B teams will play alternative games, and the team with the best record will play the final game. In this way the club will have twice the usual number of players taking part in the centre’s competitions The committee also decided to run a fours tournament on Saturday, October 21 and on Labour Day. Club selection will be the order of the day for members of the club, but entries, either in teams or of individual players, will be received from other clubs. Entries for this tournament will close on Thursday.
