COUNTY AFFAIRS

MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL CR. R. JUDD RESIGNS. LONG AND VALUABLE SERVICES RECOGNISED. (“Times- Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held on Saturday. Those present were the chairman (Mr E. W. Cheetham) and Councillors D. Bennett, C. Welch, A. Forsberg, and A. Gray. Cr R. Judd wrote tending his resignation from the council and pointing out that he felt that he could not give the necessary time to the work of the council. Councillors referred to the long and valuable service rendered to the council by Cr Judd over the last 28 years, most of which time he had been chairman, and spoke highly of the exceptionally good work he had done, especially in connection with highways through the county. Members were of the opinion that Cr Judd had given more time to the affairs of the county than had anyone else, and considered that he fully merited the appreciation and thanks of every ratepayer for his generous services. Cr Judd's resignation was accepted with deep regret. The finance report was submitted and showed a credit balance of £279 Ils fid. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £641 14s fid. The State Forest Service advised that £1 Is 3d had been allocated to the county, and it was decided to use the money on general road maintenance. The Public Works Department forwarded proposals to take a further portion of land for the proposed overhead bridge north of the Mauriceville school. It was decided to approve of the proposal and to seal the formal consent. The New Zealand Standard Institute forwarded a draft of proposed New Zealand standard specifications for road grader cutting and requested the council's comments thereon. The county clerk was directed to return the specifications without comment. The Department of Internal Affairs for.warded particulars of the proposed emergency precautions scheme. The council decided to co-operate with adjoining local bodies in any action which may be deemed necessary. The question of the non-delivery of a new power grader owing to no licence having been obtained through the import restrictions was discussed at length. The county clerk was instructed to communicate with the Department of Industry and Commerce and point out to them how serious the position was from the council’s viewpoint and endeavour to obtain a license for the importation of the machine.
