NEUTRALITY ISSUES
THE WASHINGTON DEBATE REFERENCES TO HITLER. MOVE TO AMEND RESTRICTIONS . ON SHIPPING. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day. 11.35 a.m.) WASHINGTON. October 13. In the neutrality dispute, Senator Pittman announced that he would welcome shipping changes, but they must conform to certain requirements which he considers necessary to keep the United States neutral. 1 Senators Taft and Nyc entered the Senatorial debate, the former reiterating his known stand and the latter claiming that the repeal of the arms 1 embargo would encourage a long war. 1 "You cannot build sound prosperity 1 upon the sands of wholesale murder,” s Senator Nye added.
The Vice-President (Mr J. Garner) is reported to have joined the movement to secure the modification of the shipping restrictions, his prestige avowedly helping to ,secure this object. Choking with anger at Senator Nye’s observation, Senator Norris shouted in a quavering voice: "It is without foundation to make the charge that repeal (of the arms embargo) would lead the United States into war.” As to the statement that Hitler would dislike the repeal. Senator Norris said: ‘‘Are we going to ask him what wo should do? Arc wo going to be so afraid to offend him that we are going to refuse to act?”
