MASTERTON RACES

SECOND DAY OVERCAST WEATHER. A GOOD ATTENDANCE. The concluding day of the Masterton Racing Club's spring meeting is being held at the Opaki racecourse today. The weather is dull and overcast, but taking everything into consideration the attendance is good. The track is in excellent order. and shows no signs of cutting up. Although the majority of the fields are not large, the class of horse engaged is good, and all the events are sure to be keenly contested. The results up to the time the “Times-Age” went to press were as follow: —

* TRIAL STAKES, of £75, 6f. 1 a 1, Mr W. Devon’s br g Gay Fox Il (Foxbridge—Auriculus), 8.0 (Wilson) 1 G, Mr S. Andrews’s br m Colibri (Philamor-Idanoe), 8.0 (Anderson) 2 2, Mr T. Ball’s b g Esperance Bay (Cky Blue—Bissac), car. 8.51 (P. Burgess) 3 (Winner trained by A. Jenkins, Opaki). Also started: 4 Cornaro, car. 8.4 (Newham); 5 Autolite, 8.0 (Marsh); 6 Balgowlah, 8.0 (Tattersail); 3 Siegall, 8.0 (Mudford). Won by a head; a neck between r second and third. Siegall was fourth. , Time, Imin 15 2-ssecs. ’ From the barrier Cornaro was left , and first to show out was Siegall with Autolite and Gay Fox close behind. At the first turn Autolite and Siegall I led from Esperance Bay and Cornaro, 3 with Gay Fox moving up on the outj side. As the field straigthened up for home Siegall continued to show the way from Autolite and Colibri. With 50 yards to go Colibri looked a winner, but Gay Fox, with a great burst, headed her at the post to gain the decision. SECOND HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, of £lOO. Six furlongs. 1 Mr N. M. McKenzie’s b. g. Cuisinier (Peach Brandy —Miss Quarantine), 10.8 (Pine) 1 2 Mr J. W. Lowe’s b. g. Good Sun (Australian Sun—Bonum), 10.1 (Lord) 2 5 Mr A. Goodman’s b. g. Debham t (Lackham — Deborah), 9.11 (Brearty) 3 , (Winner trained by J. J. Waller, " Awapuni.) Also started: 4 Cricket, 10.9 (Anderson), 4 La Coquette, 9.0 (Burgess); 6 Pirinoa. 9.0 (McCauley). Debham obtained the better - of the start and led for a quarter of a mile, followed by Pirinoa, La Coquette, Cricket and Good Sun. In the back stretch Debham maintained the lead with La Coquette in second place. Then came Pirinoa. Cuisinier, Cricket, Good Sun. Moving up on the outside reaching the first turn Debham continued to show the way to Cricket, with Good Sun in third position. Three furlongs from the post the order was Debham, Cricket, Cuisinier, and Good Sun. At the turn for home Pirinoa moved up to second position, with Debham still in front. Half way down the straight Cuisinier hit the front and eventually won full of running by two lengths. Good Sun came fast on the outside and was a ' length in front of Debham. Cricket was ' fourth. Time. 2.11. L MACARA HANDICAP, of £9O. Five furlongs. 1 Mr J. Bambry’s ch. m. Hunter’s Eve (Hunting Song—Tina Atua) carried 9.1 (Stowe) 1 3 Mr P. Hereford’s br. c. Dark Water (Nightmarch—Waterlow) carried 7.4 (Mudford) 2 2 Mr C. McCullough’s br. m. Shining Hours (Arausio —Sunny Hours), carried 8.5 (Baker) .... 3 Also started: 4 Conversion, carried 7.111 (Anderson); 5 Tidal Gift, carried’ 7.1 li (Marsh). (The winner was trained by C. J. Stowe, Hastings.) - Tidal Gift was badly left at the barrier. The first to show up were Shining Hours and Hunter’s Eve. At the first turn Shining Hours and Hunter’s Eve were clear of the rest of the field by four lengths. Entering the straight the order was the same, the rest of the field having closed up Half way down the straight Hunter’s Eve went to the front three lengths clear of Shining Hours, who seemed assured cf second place but Dark Water came fast on the inside, beating her by a length and a half. Hunter’s Evo led practically all the way winning by> three-quarters of a length. Tidal Gift was fourth. Time, 1.3 2-5. C. F. VALLANCE MEMORIAL HANDICAP. One and a quarter miles. 1 Yours Truly (Tattersail) 1 4 Corroboree, car 7.2 (Mudford) .... 2, 6 Winsome Lu (Spratt) 3 All. started. Half head; head. Time. 2.9 2-5. Might was fourth.
