The Hon P. C. Webb, Minister of Labour, left Wellington for the South Island last night.

Major R. L. McGaffin, who was the first man to enlist in the special force in Palmerston North, left yesterday for Burnham military camp. . Mr C. M. Bowden left Wellington recently for Sydney on a short business visit. He is accompanied by Mrs Bowden.

The condition of Mr W. Dornan, who was involved in a motor accident in Queen Street, Masterton, recently, is reported to be satisfactory.

Sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr H. O. Toogood and with Mr E. R. Rogers was expressed at the monthly meeting of the general committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association last night. Messrs A. Parlane (Wellington), A. Lord (Greenmeadows), W. H. Hodge (Auckland), E. Allen (Wanganui), P. Burston (Whangarei), G. Neighbours (Upper Hutt) and D. R. Grace (Gisborne) are visitors to Masterton and are staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel.

Mr John Sullivan (Totara, Tarawene), who has been appointed Maori -recruiting officer for the southern end of the Taranaki district, enlisted a; the age of 16 for the Great War and served in Egypt Gallipoli, and on the Somme. He is a member of the Taranaki Maori Council and Aotca Maori Association.

Captains J. C. Holmes and C. J. Williams, of the Hawke's Bay Regiment, have been promoted to the rank of major. Captain J. M. Reidy (Ist Cadet Battalion, Hawke's Bay Regiment) of the New Zealand Staff’ Corps, has been granted a short service commission. Sergeant H. V. Donald has been appointed second lieutenant and has been posted to the Ist Battalion, Hawke’s Bay Regiment.

The staff of the State Theatre last evening farewelled Mr L. R. Leary, who has been manager since June last and who has now left to enter another field of business. Both the front of the house staff and the technicians presented Mr Leary with appropriate gifts expressing their appreciation of the friendly relationships which had existed between them. Mr Leary will be remaining in Masterton for some days before taking up a new travelling appointment.
