REPLY OF THE ALLIES TO HITLER MR CHAMBERLAIN DEFINES POSITION. ACTS AND NOT WORDS WANTED FROM GERMANY. The following Daventry reports have been rebroadcast by the New Zealand national stations: — In the House of Commons. Mr Chamberlain gave a most decided reply to the speech of Herr Hitler regarding peace proposals. The issue was plain, he said. Herr Hitler had rejected all suggestions for peace until he had overwhelmed Poland as he had overthrown Czechoslovakia. Conditions could not be accepted which began by condoning aggression. Herr Hitler’s proposals were une’ertain and there was no suggestion that he was prepared to right wrongs. Acts, and not words alone, must be forthcoming before Great Britain and France would be justified in ceasing to conduct the war. Either the German Government must give convincing proof of its desire for peace by definite acts showing that its word could 1 be respected or Britain and France must persevere in their duty to the end. It was for Germany to make her choice. AMERICA AND THE SOVIET. The United States Government has made representatives to Moscow expressing the hope that a peaceful solution will be found of issues with Finland. Sweden. Norway and Denmark are expected to make similar representations to Moscow. The attitude of Finland remains firm. GERMAN LINER CAPTURED. A German liner has been captured in the South Atlantic. She slipped out of a Brazilian port on September 17. It is believed she was attempting to reach an east Russian port. NAZI ALLEGATION DENIED. A German allegation that Polish troops used poison gas mines obtained from Britain is positively denied by Britain. No poison gas in any form was sent to Poland. WESTERN FRONT. Ambushes and patrols by both sides continue on the Western Front. The Germans are still unable to attain their object of capturing prisoners, in order to gain information about the French defences.
