MASTERTON RACES

FIRST DAV RESULTS

MISHNA WINS CHIEF EVENT.

MAIDEN STAKES TO DUNCANNON

Bright sunshine prevailed for the opening of the first day of the Masterton Racing Club's spring meeting at Opaki yesterday. In the latter part of the afternoon, however, rain fell and continued for the rest of the day. The track, of course, became slippery but was in no way cut up; in fact many favourable comments were passed in regard to the state of the track and this reflects considerable credit on the work of the caretaker. Taking everything into consideration the attendance was good but the tote handled only £7539. compared with £9109 on the first day last year. The Masterton Handicap, the big event on the programme, resulted in a victory for Mishna, who went to the barrier fourth, choice to return his followers a substantial dividend. The Maiden Stakes was won by Duncannon who cleared away from the rest of the field in the run for positions and won pulling up. The Nursery Handicap was annexed by Absolve, who took the decision from the much favoured Enrich. Further results after the “TimesAge" went to press yesterday were: — MAIDEN STAKES, of £75. Into the back stretch the order remained practically the same with Siegall moving up to the leaders. As they turned for home Shetland Isle continued to show the way from Coronado and Cornaro with Duncannon placed handily on the rails. Halfway down the straight Duricannon took complete charge and crossed the line pulling up. Then came Siglow, who had moved up smartly with Coronado third. GRANDSTAND HANDICAP, of £lOO.
