CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE

Defaulter’s Trouble NOT CONSIDERED TO BE SERIOUS (BY “CARBINE.”) Defaulter’s trouble is a strained ligament in his off front leg, and is not considered to be at all serious. The swelling which was in evidence before the colt left Randwick for New Zealand had practically disappeared on his arrival home. Present intentions are to blister the affected part and to keep him pottering about the stable for a while. His trainer, F. Roberts, is convinced that he could have the colt right to race in New Zealand in the next few months, but, as there is nothing for him, he will probably not race again till he returns to Randwick for the autumn meetings. Roberts stated that Defaulter was in his best form on the trip and would have won all his weight-for-age races, while his prospects in the Melbourne Cup, in which he would not have met a very strong field, looked very bright.

Mungatoon, who was taken to Sydney as a travelling companion for Defaulter, but was not able to race because of an injury, was left at Randwick in charge of M. Polson. Roberts brought back with him the four-year-old gelding Ripley, by Bonnemont or Rivoli, from Lero, by Cyklon, from Lesbos by The Welkin. Ripley figured as a winner on two occasions last season and was once second and once third in nine starts. His first success was in a division of a maiden event at Warwick Farm in January last, and at Randwick later in that month he won a novice handicap, both races being run over a mile. Ripley was secured on lease by Roberts and will race in his colours. /
