CARTERTON

BOY SCOUTS OFFER OF SERVICES AT SHOW. ("Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Carterton Scout Committee was held in the Den on Tuesday evening, Mr Morris presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames White and Patterson, Miss Edge and the Secretary, Mr N Walsh. Mr C. W. Gaze reported that the troop was attending parades well, that there were 28 boys on the roll, and that four patrols were in operation. It was reported that the District Commissioner, Mr Halpin, was in attendance at Monday night’s parade, and had taken charge of the troop, exercising them in scouting work. The work of the boys was favourably commented upon. A letter of thanks is to be forwarded the Carterton Fire Brigade for their services in putting out the fire at the Den on a recent evening. Miss Edge, and Messrs C. W. Gaze and Morris were appointed delegates to attend a district meeting to be held in the Paris Hall, Featherston, on Monday next. The services of scouts at the P. and A. Society’s Show if required will be available. It was also stated that members of the troop could be employed for assistance in Red Cross work. It was resolved to ascertain in what way Scouts could be of use in the homes of aged couples, and in the event of husband’s being called into carnp, in carrying out such work as cutting firewood, mowing lawns or doing gardening work. Accounts amounting to £4 14s 6d were passed for payment. The treasurer, Mr C. E. White, reported the recent concert had netted £lO 12s, and that the'credit balance at the Post Office Savings Bank was £36 9s sd. It was decided that letters of thanks be forwarded to the Mayor for his donation and to Mrs V. L. Robinson for. her services in training the boys who took part in the concert. ENJOYABLE CARD PARTY. The weekly card party in connection with the Boy Scout Movement was held in the Band Room last evening and was well attended. The prizes in the aggregate were won by Mrs C. Meyrick 1, Mr Ammundsen 2, Mrs C. Holland 3. The weekly prizes went to Mrs Hopkins 1, Mrs Mellish and Mrs Ticehurst tieing for second place. The men’s prize's were won by Mr Edwards and Mr Morris. V GOLF CLUB CONCLUDING DAY OF SEASON. Saturday next will be the wind-up day of the season, for the Carterton Golf Club, when members , both ladies and men, will meet on the Taratahi links, and arrangements will be made for the choosing of teams. Members are asked to note that it will be a general tea day. BOWLING OPENING OF CARTERTON GREEN. The official opening of .the Carterton Bowling Green will take place on Saturday at 2 o'clock, when it is expected there will be a large attendance of members, and intending members. Special care has been taken with the green since the closing day of last season, and if appearances go for anything, then the Carterton green should be in splendid order. Members are asked to note that it will be a general tea day. Visitors from kindred clubs will be present, and given fine weather the official opening should augur well for a successful season.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute was held in the Masonic Hall yesterday afternoon. Mrs H. Knutson presiding over a fair attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode to Friendship followed by the Aspiration and the Prayer for Peace. Correspondence was read from the Dominion Federation of Women’s Institutes advising that the, Dominion Council would meet in Wellington on November 22; the New Zealand Institute for the Blind in regard to the sale of basketware at the Carterton Show: from Mr Twomey acknowledging donations to the Makogai Leper Fund from individual members of the Institute. It was announced that Messrs H. Knutson and F. Peters had been appointed delegates to the half-yearly council meeting of the Wairarapa Federation to be held on October 12 at Martinborough. The following are the results of the competitions: —Madeira cake, Mrs E. T. Beaven 1, Mrs A. Knutson 2, Mrs C. Holland 3. Decorated vase of flowers, Mrs A. Knutson 1, Mrs W. W. Williams 2. Mrs S. Rooney 3. Knitted bed socks, Mrs E. T. Phelps 1. Mrs R. McCann 2, Mrs D. J. Irwin 3. Balaclava, Mrs Holland 1, Mrs W. Steven 2. Mrs E. T. Beaven 3. It was arranged that the knitted articles in the competitions be forwarded to the local branch of the Red Cross Society. The "Bring and Buy Stall" did good business and the wool fund will benefit considerably. A playette entitled “The Crystal Gazer” was produced by the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Institute. The performers were Mrs F. Groube and Mrs R. Gallon and it was thoroughly enjoyed. Mesdames R. Canister, R. J. Gallon, Ross Gallon and F. Groube judged the competitions and on being thanked by

the president each was presented with a shoulder spray. The meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. St. Mark’s Ladies’ Guild. The St Mark’s Ladies’ Guild will hold a sale of work in the Carterton Bandroom tomorrow. An energetic ladies’ committee have the arrangements well in hand and everything points to a most successful sale. Railway Traffic. As the result of the Railway Transport lorries having been taken off the Main Highways a much larger quantity of goods is being carried on the railways than has been the case for some considerable time.
