MASTERTON PLAYREADERS

SUCCESSFUL SEASON CLOSED LAST NIGHT. OFFICERS FOR COMING YEAR ELECTED. , The annual meeting of the Masterton Playreaders was held last evening, followed by an enjoyable play-reading and supper. The chair was taken by the president, Mr H. Mackenzie Douglas, and there was a large attendance of members, with apologies for absence from several who were unable to be present. In his remarks, the president referred to the successful season closing that evening. A varied selection of thirteen plays had been read, which, it was thought, has been thoroughly enjoyed. The circle had lost during the year a member of the committee, Mr J. H. Kemnitz, through his removal from Masterton; Mr C. C. Kyngdon had been elected to take his place on the committee. Another valuable member, Mr G. C. Gaze, had left on military service, and had been elected an honorary member for the period of his service. There was also now in camp Mr David Tomlinson, already an honorary member. The balance-sheet submitted showed a small, but sufficient, excess of receipts over expenditure, with no outstanding liabilities. Officers for the 1940 season were elected as follows: —President, Mr H. Mackenzie Douglas; committee, Mrs T. Jordan, Misses R. Elliott and Sellar, Messrs V. Joseph and J. B. Bennett; play selection committee, Mesdames E. J. Rich and H. H. Daniell and the president; casting committee, Miss K. Cruickshank and Mrs W. H. Cruickshank; hon secretary and treasurer, Mrs H. Mackenzie Douglas. Considerable discussion was held as to the most suitable evening for playr'eadings in the coming season, and eventually Monday was decided on. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring officers. A humorous Irish play was then read, the following members taking part: Mrs W. A. Michael, Mrs Tier, Misses Major, Elliott and Hornabrook, and Messrs Bennet, H. H. Daniell, Douglas, O’Hara Smith, Kyngdon and Sykes. Supper provided by the lady members was greatly enjoyed and the gathering dispersed after pleasant social intercourse.
