UNNECESSARY ALARM CAUSED 1 IN COUNTRY AREAS.
MAYOR DEPRECATES ACTION
It has come to the notice of the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, that in parts of the district, a canvass is being made to ascertain what accommodation is available in private homes for the population of Wellington in the event of the evacuation of the city. While appreciating the zeal of the persons concerned, Mr Jordan deprecates any such canvass.
“The effort has been to increase the state of uneasiness in some households,” said Mr Jordan, “and this is least desirable just now. There is not the slightest cause for any such step to be taken.”
The Mayor said he spoke as a member of the Emergency Precautions Committee set up by the Government to make provision for any such emergency. “This committee,” he added, “has the best expert advice available on such a matter. I would strongly urge that the individuals concerned and the organisations, if any, should confine their energies to their ordinary activities, perhaps with a greater intensity in order to consume their zeal. Authoritative warning wiill be given when provision is likely to be required.”
