LOCAL AND GENERAL

Frosts in Masterton. This week has been one of continual frosts in Masterton, another one having been registered this morning, that of 2.7 degrees. - .

Injured Man’s Condition. A slight improvement is reported in the condition of Mr W. Dornan, who was involved in a motor collision in Queen Street, Masterton, last week.

Limit of Trout Fishing Bags. Under the Taupo and Rotorua Trout Fishing Regulations issued with last night’s Gazette the bag limit for both districts is reduced from 12 to 10 daily. As regards Lake Taupo, an area within 200 yards of the shore is now reserved for fly fishing. There is a similar reserved area for fly fishing in respect of Lake Rotorua. Various amendments relating to types of licences and fees have been made in respect of both the Taupo and Roßtorua districts. Rush of Air Force Applicants. Over 2000 applications and inquiries have been received in response to the call for men between the ages of 18 and 35 for various ground positions in the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, said yesterday that the number of positions to be filled was about 900 . So great was the number of applications that the supplies of forms at Auckland, Wellington, Petone and Dunedin were exhausted on Monday. Applications were still pouring in. Life Insurance & War Risks. Insurance companies in Wellington have not yet determined the extra premium to cover war risk in life policies. As the increase will not be applied till men leave for active service, the feeling is that the occasion has not yet arisen to make a decision. It is said, however, that the majority of companies favour an additional premium of £5 per cent on new policies now being taken out. Persons buying insurance now are asked to sign a clause agreeing to pay the additional amount which will be applied when troops leave for overseas service. Plane Damaged. The Middle Districts Aero Club’s Gipsy Moth plane ZK —AGY was fairly extensively damaged at Milsom Aerodrome yesterday when it suddenly moved off out of control after the propeller had been swung. The pilot was not aboard and the machine ran about 15 yards into a corner of the club’s hangar. One of the wings struck the building and the machine swung round and crashed head-on into one of the main doors. The propeller was broken in two places and the engine bearers, the tail of the fuselage and both port wings were also damaged. Two windows in the hangar were smashed. Patriotic Purpose. A notice gazetted last night over the signature of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, sets out that the following shall be an approved patriotic purpose under the Patriotic Purposes Emergency Regulations: The supply during the war as defined by the said regulations of comforts, conveniences, and special equipment to members of His Majesty's New Zealand Naval, Military, and Air Forces, and to New Zealand members of any other of His Majesty’s forces. “This is the first notice under regulation 28 of the new regulations,” the Minister said, “setting out lawful purposes for which funds may be raised and expended. There will be, as time goes on, other notices declaring a patriotic purpose to be an approved patriotic purpose under these regulations.”

“The man sitting next to me was talking all through the opera.” “Everybody talks at the opera.” “Yes, but this man was counting sheep."
