WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WAIRARAPA MEETINGS GATHERING AT UPPER PLAIN. COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Upper Plain. Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs Mannel. Mrs G. Dagg presided over a very good attendance of members.

The meeting opened with the prayer for peace of the world and the aspirations.

Mesdames Scott and Laing were appointed as delegates to attend the Federation meeting to be held at Martinborough next month. During the afternoon Mrs W. James gave a very interesting talk on home nursing and also a demonstration on bandaging which was watched with keen interest. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

The demonstration was in connection with a box of Christmas novelties from Massey College which contained some very pretty and interesting pieces of handwork. Potatoes for a competition were distributed amongst members. The bring and buy stall did good business. The competitions for the month resulted as follow:—Best bloom: Mrs W. Taplin, 1; Mrs C. R. Jones. 2; Mrs MeJoiTow. 3. Sponge roll: Mrs W. Taplin, 1; Mrs Jones, 2. Marmalade: Mrs VI. Taplin, 1. Coat hanger: Mrs Jones, 1; Miss O. Trass, 2; Mrs MeJarrow, 3. Article from sugar bag: Mrs Jones, 1. The afternoon tea .hostesses were Mesdames G. Dagg, C. Jones. W. Taplin and Miss Q. Trass. A bright and interesting gathering was brought to a close with the singing of the National, Anthem. SOLWAY-MANAIA. GARDEN CIRCLE ACTIVITIES. (“Times-Age” Special.) A monthly meeting of the SolwayManaia Women’s Institute was held yesterday. Mrs Munn (president) welcomed the members and visitors. A.pologies for absence were received from Mesdames McLachlan, Cotton and R. Allan. Mrs Munn was appointed delegate for the Dominion Federation meeting to be held in Wellington next month. It was decided that the Garden Circle invite all. members of the Institute to attend an afternoon on October 19 at the residence of -Mrs Reynolds, The Terrace, Lansdowne, when competitions will be held for: (1) Best floral novelty; (2) best bloom. The Roll Call vzill be “That which I find the greatest pest in my garden.” Mrs Kilgour was heartily thanked for her interesting talk on the work carried out by the Crippled Children’s Society. The competitions resulted as follow:—Sewing: Mrs Scriviner. Knitted garment: Mrs Reynolds. Cushion: Miss McAllister, 1; Miss Russell, 2. Madiera cake: Mrs Nicol, 1; Miss McAllister, 2. Biscuits: Mrs Nicol, 1; Miss McAllister, 2. Collection of bulbs: Mrs Munn, Mrs Reynolds (equal), 1; Mrs Woollett, 2. The hostesse for November will be Mesdames Whittaker, Lochore, Webber and Catherall. The programme is: Roll call, ‘‘Latest hint I have heard.” Sewing, smocked apron; cooking, (1) gingerbread, (2) meringues; flowers, decorated sand-filled saucer. MARTINBOROUGH. MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Martinborough Women’s Institute which was held yesterday was presided over by Mrs J. Lamb. The proceedings were opened with the singing of the National Anthem and a prayer for peace. A very interesting talk on Denmark was delivered by Mrs T. R. Barrer, of Masterton, after which she was presented with a shoulder spray and accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competition for a saucer posy was won by Mrs Pryor. Arrangements were completed for the visit of the Blind Institute Band and for the half yearly council meeting of the Wairarapa Federation which is to be held in the Parish Hall on Thursday, October 12. Mesdames Caseley and Beveridge were elected delegates. A display of handcraft by the local Institute will be given at that meeting.
