The “Morgenbladet’s” Berlin correspondent says, with the idea of depriving Britain of imports from Scandinavia, Germany is offering to absorb Scandinavia’s exports of coal and industrial products in return for supplies of wheat from southern Europe, especially Rumania, from which country Germany is removing purchases of wheat with all possible speed. FINNISH STEAMER DESTROYED BY U BOAT, CERTIFICATE FOR CAPTAIN. (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, October 4. A Ministry of Information communique states that a U-boat torpedoed ihe Finnish steamer Walma off Sweden. She was laden with cellulose destined for Britain. The U-boat commander handed over a certificate reading: “Destroyed on account of destination of cargo.” ANXIETY IN BELGIUM GOVERNMENT FINANCING SHIPBUILDING. TO ENSURE CONTINUANCE OF TRADE. (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) BRUSSELS, October 4. The Government is financing the construction of new merchantmen!, to assure the continuance of seaborne trade. Industrial circles are increasingly uneasy owing to Germany’s unrestricted submarine campaign on neutrals, especially Scandinavian countries, from which Belgium gets iron ore and wool. It is suggested that the Government purchase Spanish and Portuguese warships to convoy neutral merchantmen. RUSSIAN CHARTERS DEMAND FOR SCANDINAVIAN SHIPS. NUMBER LEASED BY NORWAY. (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, October 4 The Copenhagen correspondent of the British United Press states that Russia is endeavouring to charter Swedish, Danish and Norwegian ships. It is authoritatively stated Norway nas agreed to lease an unspecified number, while the others are negotiating.
