SINKING OF THE CLEMENT ATTACKER THE ADMIRAL SCHcER. ACCORDING TO AMERICAN CORRESPONDENT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON. October 3. The Rio De Janeiro correspondent of the “New York “Times” claims that it is definitely established that lhe German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer sank the British steamer Clement in the South Atlantic. Three ,- sources besides his own most reliable information confirm I his. It is reported that the warship tired 25 shots into the freighter before torpedoing her.
The Ministry of Information states that the remainder of the crew, of the Clement have arrived al Maceio. All were well.
A Rio de Janeiro message reports that survivors said that when between Pernambuco and Maceio they heard the sound of motors and saw an aeroplane circling overheard. The plane’s machineguns fired and then a warship came into view. It halted the Clement sent a boat across and ordered the crew to lake to the boats. It took the captain aboard. The Clement sank in 45 minutes.
