RECREATION WEEK
OBSERVANCE IN MASTERTON. OPENING EVENTS ON SATURDAY. Recreation Week was ushered in on Saturday in Masterion by the playing of several hockey matches on the Lansdowne grounds in the afternoon and by a performance of “Lucky Dip” in the Opera House in the evening by the Masterton Little Theatre Society. Other attractions will be held this week to mark Masterton’s association with the development of physical and cultural recreation.
As on the previous occasions recently on which the Little Theatre Society presented “Lucky Dip,” those taking part acquitted themselves with credit and the comedy was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. The door takings amounted to over £lO and the net proceeds will be devoted to the Mayor’s Emergency Fund. The next feature of Recreation Week will be an Orchestral Society concert in the Opera House tomorrow night at 8 o’clock. The orchestra, under the conductorship of Mr C. W. Kerry, will present a programme comprised largely of request items and will be assisted by two vocalists, Miss Jamieson and Mr Wales. A trio for violin (Mr E. Larsen), cello (Mr E. F. Wilson) and piano (Mr Kerry) will provide something new at orchestral concerts in Masterton.
Other events later in the week include indoor and outdoor basketball contests and a military drill display by Territorials in the Municipal Hall on Wednesday night, amateur wrestling and gymnastics by Mr A. Jenkins’s team in the Opera House on Thursday night, Rugby and physical drill displays at the Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon and a revue concert at the Opera House in the evening.
