SOLDIERS FAREWELLED
BY RED STAR CRICKET CLUB. PRESENTATIONS TO W. PETERSON AND A. FRIEND. Messrs Wally Peterson and Arty Friend, two members of the Red Star Cricket Club’s senior eleven, who have enlisted and who will leave next week to undergo military training, were the guests of honour at a farewell gathering held last night in the Savage Club rooms by the Red Star Cricket Club. Mr W. R. Pawson occupied the chair and explained the object of the’ gathering. He wished their two club mates the best of luck and hoped that they would return safely from the war to again take up the game of cricket. He paid a tribute to their cricket abilities and to their popularity among their clubmates and friends. Mr Gordon Peterson, on behalf of the club, presented each with a shaving set and brushes. He referred to the severe loss to the club their departure would be as their places would be hard to fill. Both had rendered the club excellent service for a number of seasons, and the senior team would sadly miss them in the competition this year. He congratulated them on answering their country’s call and trusted that they would return safely. The large attendance, one of the greatest in the history of the club, accorded the guests hearty cheers and musical honours. Both suitably replied. A number of toasts were honoured, the gathering proving to be a most enjoyable one. THREE PRESENTATIONS WELL KNOWN FOOTBALLERS HONOURED. A gathering was held in the office of Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., Chapel Street, Masterton, yesterday afternoon to say “au revoir” to three members of the staff—Messrs J. E Crisp, O. J. Hatton and C. McGurk—who have been accepted to go into training with the first New Zealand volunteers to offer their services to their country. They will leave Masterton on Tuesday morning, and the opportunity was taken by the firm’s manager, Mr K. D. Duncan, to make, on behalf of the staff, a presentation to each of the men. Appropriate speeches were made by Messrs Duncan, Eden and Heath, and each of the volunteers suitably responded. The gathering closed with musical honours for Messrs Crisp, Hatton and McGurk. Mr Hatton is a member of the Old Boys senior football fifteen, and one of the cleverest five-eighths Wairarapa has had for many years.
Mr Crisp is an ex-member of the Old Boys’ seniors and has represented Wairarapa on many occasions on the football field, playing an outstanding game as half-back. A very pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs V. H. Heath recently, when a few friends gathered to bid farewell to Messrs Crisp, Hatton and McGurk, prior to their departure for camp.
