“WE DIVED DEEP”

SUBMARINE COMMANDERS STORY. SINKING OF THE COURAGEOUS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. WILHELMSHAVEN, September 29. The U-boat which torpedoed the H.M.S. Courageous has arrived here. The commander, broadcasting, said:—

“We were south-west of Ireland looking for a Sunday joint when we saw a British ship at 4 p.m. We submerged and Waited for it to come nearer. Then suddenly we saw the Courageous, with an escort of two planes and other vessels. We waited 90 minutes till the Courageous was athwart our bows. Then we saw two destroyers coming toward us. We, therefore, fired our torpedoes. We heard several detonations and then the thrash of the destroyers propellers overhead. Depth charges shook the cups from the tabl6 and electric lights from the sockets. We dived deep, undamaged, and stayed under for several hours.”
