Sir W. G. Coxen has been elected Lord Mayor of London, a cablegram reports. The Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, who .is visiting Masterton during the weekend, arrived today. Mr Winston Jones, youngest son of Mr and Mrs H. J. Jones, who is a member of the Auckland Aerodrome staff, is on a visit to Masterton.
The Rev. T. V. Pearson, of Master ton, has been posted as a chaplain, fourth class (Church of England) in the New Zealand Chaplains Department of the defence forces.
Mrs S. Burling, of “Kandahar,” Lansdowne, and her two daughters, Mrs Madden and Miss Burling, have returned from a holiday trip to Honolulu.
The honorary medal of merit of the Boy Scouts Association was yesterday presented to Mr H. V. Foster, Wellington, by the Dominion Chief Scout, the Governor-General, Lord Galway, at the annual meeting of the Scout Council at Wellington. Lord Galway attended the meeting in scout uniform. The medal was awarded to Mr Foster for his services to the scout movement during the past 11 years. Two ex-sole selectors of the Canterbury Rugby Union are among me officers of the special force now called up for service. One is Captain J. T. Burrows, All Black for the South African tour in 1928-29, and manager of the All Blacks against South Africa in 1937, and the other is Captain H. O. Jef coate, an old Southland player. Both officers are members of the teaching staff of Christchurch Boys’ High School. The death occurred on Thursday of Mr Thomas S. Mayer, Day’s Bay. Mr Mayer, who was 70 years of age, was very well known in the Wellington soft goods trade, having been a departmental head in the firm of Ross and Glendining for many years. He served the firm for 50 years, having joined it as a boy in Dunedin. He came to Wellington as head of a department in 1890, and continued in that position till he retired on superannuation about three years ago. The Dominion Chief Commissioner. Mr Hector Christie, Wanganui, was ■yesterday re-elected chairman of the council of the New Zealand Boy Scout Association, at the annual meeting in Wellington. Messrs J. Todd McCaw, W. H. Nichols, J. N. Greenland, and W. H. Cunningham were elected to the council. The following were elected or reelected members of the executive committee: Sir James Grose. Messrs D. A. Ewen. D. R. Menzies, G. J. Reid, F. G. Southon, J. T. McCaw and P. T. Smithers.
Formerly a prominent Auckland athlete, well known throughout the province, Mr Hubert Henry Dacre, aged 68, died at Kaitaia on Tuesday. Mr Dacre was born in Devonport, and was educated at St. John's College. He entered business as a dentist in Auckland with Dr. A. G. Maitland, and about 20 years ago established his own practice at Mangonui and Kaitaia. An all-round athlete as a youth, Mr Dacre was a member of the champion senior - Auckland rowing crew, which had an unbeaten record in the late ’nineties. He was a member of the North Shore Rowing Club, and also the Star Boating Club, Wellington. He represented Auckland and Wellington at Rugby, and he played for the North Shore Club in Auckland. The death has occurred at Winton of Mr William Hamilton, a brother of the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, and of Mr J R. Hamilton, of Winton, a former M.P. for Awarua. Mr William Hamilton was a former Mayor of Winton, and played a big part in the dairying industry of the Winton district. He was born at Forest Hill 63 years ago. He first acquired a holding on his own account at Lochiel. Later his properties embraced farms at Forest Hill, Winton. Riverside, and Drummond. In conjunction with his farming activities, he conducted a butchery business at Winton for many years. A member of the Winton Borough Council for many years, he was elected Mayor in 1932-33. At the time of his death he was chairman of file Upper Winton River Board, an office he held for many years.
