WAR LEGISLATION
SOME CONTROVERSIAL BILLS HOPES OF ENDING SESSION NEXT WEEK. TAXATION & OTHER MEASURES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Measures on the order paper, including the Bill imposing the special in direct taxation for war purposes, were considered by the House of Representatives yesterday. Though it had been hoped some days ago that it would be possible to finish the session this week the Acting-Prime Minister Mr Fraser informed members that this would not be practicable in view of the legisla lion still to be dealt with. He gave an outline of the legislative programme for the remainder of the session, ano indicated quite plainly that some ol the measures —notably the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill and the Reserve Bank Amendment Bill —maj be controversial Another instalment of new legislation was introduced. The agreement between the Government and the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association for the provision of medi cal services in relation to maternity cases is given legislative effect by the Social Security Amendment Bill which also removes several anomalies experienced in the administration oi the age benefits section of the social .security scheme. Several clauses of general interes; were brought down for inclusion in th< 'Statutes Amendment Bill. One prohi bits the drinking of intoxicating liquors in public dance halls or the vicinity ol them, and another gives the power tc establish a special court to hear work ers’ compensation cases. Mr Fraser said he was anxious to close the session as early as possible next week. *
