NEWS DISTRIBUTION

EFFORTS FOR IMPROVEMENT IN BRITAIN POSITION BEING REVIEWED. DANGERS OF BUREAUCRATIC CONTROL. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received This Day, 11.40 a.m.) LONDON, September 28. In the House of Commons, the Prime Minister (Mr Chamberlain) said: “As a result of Lord MacMillan’s request for a clarification of his position, I wish to state that Lord MacMillan’s responsibility for news does not extend beyond the provision of means of its communication to the Press. His function has been simply to issue.from a central source whatever news is made available by other Government Departments. Lord MacMillan is engaged upon a review of the arrangements for the distribution of news, including the question of direct contacts between the Press and Departments.”

The Premier added that a reduction in the number of 8.8. C. Governors had been undertaken to ensure the smooth and swift operation of the broadcasting system under war time conditions.

Replying to Mr C. R. Attlee's reference to grave dissatisfaction with the fact that the 8.8. C. was becoming bureaucratic, Mr Chamberlain said he realised that there was such a danger, bin changes were necessary to ensure quick decisions.
