TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Otaki-Maori Fields Under Review LING MEMORIAL HANDICAP PROMISES TO BE EXCELLENT EVENT QUALITY HORSES IN HEMA TE AO HANDICAP (BY “CARBINE.”) A pleasant day's racing seems assured for those attending the Otaki Maori Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow. The entries are good and the quality of the horses is excellent. The betting will be on the win-and-place system. The Ling Memorial Handicap gives promise of being one of the best events of the day, as really first-class runners are engaged. The open sprint, the Hema Te Ao Handicap, has also attracted a quality field and a thrilling finish seem> certain.
Dorado if in form should be hard to beat. Lustral has done nothing so far this season, but at the same time the chances of this runner are not to be tossed aside. Golden Memory has been running into places lately and should not be far away when the final numbers are hoisted. Earl Colossus should go well in this event and will in all probability be strongly supported. Sir Nigel is capable of winning in this company and is expected to be with the leaders for most of the way at least. All Blood is a good horse but might be in need of a race or two. Of the rest Lady Chat loojrs the best bet. Support, however, may come for Dorado Golden Memory Earl Colossus
Practically unknown form comprises the field in the Puhi Maiden Plate." All the runners will carry 8.5 and a good, finish should result. Well-informed circles are of the opinion that Sir Crusoe will be *well to the fore when the field fi ia, hes past the post. In his last start /$s gelding was anything but lucky;' Of the others Royal Sign, Cornaro, .Parian, Sky Limit, and Lady Cygnus look the best but this" is'a race "in'wHich the investor will need to be wary. Final selections, however, may include Sir Crusoe k '_ Parian i Royal Sign
It is anticipated that Shining Hours, even with top weight, will be in the money. Colincamps is also expected to run well, and it must be remembered that he likes'the Otaki track. Le To ■ quet, Night Eruption and Vadanoe are runners who must be given every chance and they are sure to receive a fair portion of the money. In many circles Vascones is considered to have more than an average chance in this race. Dainty Sheila and Gay Hunting must not be overlooked while Joe Louis might upset matters. Those finding favour on the day may include Colincamps Shining Hours Vascones
Lucullus Lad has been accorded the honour of carrying top weight in the Ling Memorial Handicap Stakes, the big event on the programme, and he must be given a chance. Play On looks to have a fair chance. Tooley Street, Trebor and Mataroa are horses who will probably be favoured in this race. Yours Truly, with only 7.9, must be given more than an even break, while Solaria and Might look to have definite possibilities. Of the others Liane appears the best. Support, however, may come for Might Yours Truly
The two top weights, Brazil and Hinerawe, must be given a show and will probably come in for a good portion of support. At 8.4 Colonel Bogey looks, a good thing, and it is considered by many that he will be in the hunt at the right end. White Rajah may be liked but has nothing to gain him more than average favour. Verey Lights should go well in this company and so should Trench Law. The rest do not impress and the public may favour Colonel Bogey Verey Lights Brazil
With 9.0 up, Arctic King will face the starter top weight in the Hema Te Ao Handicap and will probably be well supported. Disdain should not be far away as the winning post is sighted, nor should Gaj' Chou. Screen Star, Lord Cavendish, Globe Trotter, Sporting Gift and Mittie must be considered, as each is capable of winning such a race as this. Corroboree looks to be the only one of the rest who could upset the field. Final selections may include Disdain Globe Trotter Lord Cavendish
Sudan looks to have a good chance in this race and will probably be well supported. Flying Acre and Seyfried are expected to be on hand for most of the vzay. A horse whose chances must be well thought of is Golden Enterprise, who scored a good second at Foxton. Little Robin might upset calculations in this event, while Girl Pat and Gascon must be considered. However, the public may favour Sudan Golden Enterprise Flying Acre
Conversion .. 710 Bourmond ..7 7 Sleeveless must be seriously considered in this event, and many good judges contend that she will be with the leaders at the right end. Great Legion at 7.10 appears to be well in and should be with the placed horses over the distance. Filetto, Tidal Gift and Fiancee should make the going interesting, while Little Dorritt may spring a surprise. Support may come for Sleeveless Great Legion Filetto RACING FIXTURES September 30. —Otaki-Maori Racing Club. September 30, October 2. —Ohinemuri Jockey Club. October 5, 7. —Dunedin Jockey Club.
