WHITE FEATHER
SENT TO RETURNED SOLDIER M.P.
COMMENT IN THE HOUSE,
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day.
A white feather sent to him by post, accompanied by a letter, was exhibited by Mr Holland (Opposition, Christchurch North) in the House of Representatives last night. Mr Holland deplored actions of this type, which he said were by no means uncommon. “I regret to say that in many instances our soldiers are being scoffed at in the streets of Wellington,” he said.
Mr Doidge (Opposition, Tauranga) “And in Auckland.” Government members: “No, no.”
Mr Holland: "If my friends opposite do not believe that, will they believe that white feathers are being sent to returned soldiers? I have here a letter, with a white feather, that was sent to me. I served in the last war and bear scars. I have already enlisted again to serve my country and here is my enlistment card. I hope that the person who sent me this is so upset by what he has done that he stays awake all right.” Mr Holland said that this was happening all through the country and he suggested that it should be made a heavily-punishable offence.
The best feature of our railways, states an engineer, is the system of signalling. But surely he will admit that the rails have their points.
Militiamen at one camp in England received a gift of cough lozenges from an old lady resident of the district. Tell that to the hoarse marines!
