CARTERTON

LATE MR L. A. BISHOP INQUEST ADJOURNED. ("Times-Age” Special.) An inquest on the body of the late Mr L. A. Bishop, who died after a short illness on Monday afternoon, was held in the Carterton Courthouse yesterday afternoon, before the District Coroner, Mr E. G. Eton. After the. identification of the body the evidence of Mrs Bishop was heard, at the conclusion of which the coroner adjourned the proceedings sine die. FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITIONS FINALISED. Several competitions which have been in progress to augment the funds required for the purchase of new uniforms for members of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade, were finalised yesterday with the following result: — Cake, Mrs A. Clark; dinner, Mr Reg. Phelps; sachet, Mrs Bath. The drawing of the raffle for a dressed doll will take place on Saturday. LADIES 5 GOLF DRAW FOR COMPETITIONS. The following is the draw for an L.G.U. medal round and Mrs Orr’s trophy and the final for the senior championship to be played on the Taratahi links on Saturday:— Senior championship: Mrs C. C. Callender will meet Miss Welch and a keen contest is anticipated. No. 11 tee: Mrs Orr and Miss Smart; Miss Berrell and Miss N. Renall; Mrs Candy and Mrs Riggs; Mrs Moroney and Mrs R. N. Campbell; Miss M. Campbell and Miss Hamer; Mrs Murray and Miss Freer. No. 9 tee: Mrs Ross and Miss Lamb; Mrs Colson and Mrs Forbes; Miss Knutson and Miss Peters; Mrs Harrington and Mrs Gustofson; Miss T. Anderson and Miss I. Corlet; Mrs M. Miss Smart and Miss Lamb will be in charge cf the afternoon tea. BABY CARNIVAL DRAWING TO A CLOSE. The W.D.F.U. Baby Carnival will be brought to a close on October 6, and the various committees are working hard for the success of their respective candidate. Rivalry is becoming keener as the final day draws near. The votes recorded for each candidate up till last night is as follow: — Parkvale (Dorothy Rayner) .. 11,892 Dalefield (Dermot Fitzgerald) 11.819 Belvedere-Taratahi (John Corbet) 10,937 BOY SCOUTS WEEKLY CARD TOURNAMENT. The weekly card tournament in aid of the Carterton troop of the Boy Scouts was held in the Band Room last evening and was fairly well attended. After cards supper was handed round. The winners of card prizes were: Ladies, Mrs K. Hodder 1, Mrs Brown 2. Men, Mr M. Ticehurst 1, Mrs Patterson 2. GOLF AT TARATAHI DRAW FOR FOUR BALL BOGEY. The following is the draw for a four ball bogey competition to be played on the Taratahi Links on Saturday next: — No. 1 tee —Roydhouse and Harry v Dudson and Barr; B. Booth and Tankersley v Fisher and E. T. Beaven; George and Jackson v Steel and F. Hill; Taylor and Aplin v Goodin and Candy. No. 3 toe —Whilburn and Krahagen v Taverner and Fitzgerald; Brown and Gustopon v Small and Colson; Kiddie and Lane v Smith and J. Lawrence. No. 17 tee—Hughes and S. Hill v Shankland and Harrington; Riggs and Dwane v Clark and B. Beaven. , Fishing Season. The fishing season will officially be opened in New Zealand on October 1. Licences are now being issued. Carterton fishermen report there are good prospects in the Wairarapa streams this season. Painful Accident. A painful accident was sustained by Mrs A. Brown, of Richmond Road, Carterton, recently when she had a narrow escape from losing the index finger of her left hand. Mrs Brown was cutting kindling wood and was holding a piece in her left hand while she cut it with an axe. Striking a little too close to her hand the axe hit her finger and caused a painful wound which necessitated medical attention, several stitches having to be put in. Disposal of Business. ' The old established bakery business of Whyte and Co, after a period of utility extending over the past 63 years has changed hands and in future one of the partners. Mr C. E. Stevens, will carry on the business.
