FAMOUS HOLSTEINS
CANADIAN EXPERIMENTAL FARM.
MASTER BREEDER’S SHIELD. VANCOUVER.-. The Holstein cattle of the Canadian Government Experimental Farm at Agassiz, near here, have becorfie worldfamous and are an example of what can be accomplished from a modest beginning of a few foundations cows and the continued use of proper sires, modern health regulations and a strict programme of blood testing. This wonder herd was first formed in 1912, consisting of a pedigree bull and seven foundation cows.
Prob..ply the greatest honour to come to the Agassiz Experimental Farm herd was the recent winning of the Master Breeder’s Shield. In a herd of intermediate size, this meant the breeding of 12 XX bulls, 12 Gold Medal cows, and 12 excellent cows. Among other distinctions, two cows of the herd have each produced over 1,250 pounds of butter fat. One of the cows, Agassiz Segis May Echo, won ■ the world’s record in 1922 for fat production with 30,886 pounds of milk and 1,345 pounds of fat, while another member of the famous herd, Agassiz Pietje Inca Sylvia, made the fine record of 29,012 pounds of milk and 1,257 nounds of fat.
