There is talk in U.S.A, of a shortage of thoroughbred horses and of the need to “speed up production.” The “Blood-Horse,” official journal of the American Bloodstock Breeders’ Association, fails to see any reason for speeding up production. It believes that “increased production inevitably means a lowering of the standard for the breed. “There were perhaps a thousand thoroughbred stallions being used in 1939 to produce foals for racing purposes. “And there are mares in production, by the thousands, which, but for this so-called shortage, would not be worth their registration fee as producers of racing stock. “The only way to breed better horses is to breed from the best and . discard the worst. “We have reached a point where we are unwilling to discard even the worst. “We have gone further than that. “We are actually dredging up the decaying remains of families which years ago proved their ineffectiveness and passed into limbo. “This reclaimed stock will prove expensive to those who attempt the reclaiming.” ■
