COUNTY AFFAIRS

WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL SUBSTANTIAL CREDIT BALANCE COST OF ROAD INSPECTION. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held at Carterton yesterday. Those present were the chairman, Mr Duncan McGregor, and Councillors F. Court, F. Joblin, C. A. Cameron, A. McGregor, A. E. Reid, W. E. Allen, W. Rendall and L. Gallon.

The treasurer reported a credit balance of £5545. The receipts since last meeting amounted to £8479. Accounts amounting to £2066 were passed for payment. It was decided to buy Health Stamps to the value of £5.

The Transport Department wrote requesting some financial assistance towards the cost of road inspection. The position, it was understood, was that if some assistance was not forthcoming it would be necessary to transfer one of the Wairarapa inspectors to Hawke’s Bay. The chairman remarked that the system of local bodies contributing to the cost was at present very haphazard, some paying varying amounts and others nothing. The original idea was that the contribution would be for this year only, but, since war had broken out, the proposed collection of licenses by the Post Offices had been abandoned. and the grant would be an annual one.

“It is quite reasonable that we should pay something out of the heavy traffic fees,” said Mr McGregor .“When we had our own inspector we paid our proportion of the cost.”.

It was decided to leave the matter in abeyance until the other' local bodies in the district could be approached with a view to making proportional contributions.

The secretary of the Wairarapa District Zone Centennial Committee advised that consideration had been given to the project of reconstruction of the Carterton Swimming Baths, featuring special memorial gates and a children's paddling pool, and had decided to recommend the project to the Wellington Provincial Council for approval. The Carterton Borough Council had been asked to forward a sketch plan of the design, together with an estimate of the cost, which must be in the hands of the Council not later than October 31. 1939.
